Is The Brain Training For Dogs Online Dog Training Program Any Good?
Let’s have a look at one popular online dog training program called “Brain Training For Dogs”. Is it worth your time and money?
After spending a little bit of time in the members area looking through the training content and videos, you can really tell that Ms. Farricelli is a true professional dog trainer. Here’s a little bit of information about the author of Brain Training For Dogs (BTFD) – Adrienne Farricelli.
Adrienne Farricelli has been working professionally with dogs for more than a decade. She got her start in 2006 working in an animal hospital, and in 2007 she started volunteering at the local shelter, where she fostered and trained pets in need of temporary homes.
She is currently a certified dog trainer and behavior consultant. She holds dual certification in dog training. In 2010, after undergoing more than 200 hours of apprenticeship under a master dog trainer, she became certified by the Italian Association for Dog Trainers and Canine Consultants. After teaching basic and advanced obedience classes in Missouri and spending the summer teaching Canine Musical Freestyle, she obtained certification by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT-KA®) in the United States.
Ms. Farricelli is a force-free trainer using scientifically based training methods focused on the rewarding world of positive reinforcement training. CCPDT requires her to continue her education, so she is often attending seminars to keep up-to-date with the latest dog training and behavior-modification trends.
Let’s have a look at the content menu in the members area.
As you will see, there is too much here to cover, but you will get an idea of the massive training content you get with this course.
This is definitely not a dog training course you plow through in a few days, or a week or two. You will most likely spend at least a couple of months with your furry friend going through the training modules. And it will be journey of fun and true enjoyment. You will start to understand your dog a lot better after the first few modules and how to easily correct unwanted behavior.
A lot of people think they can shout and use profanity when a pet is not behaving as it should, and they think that shouting will change the unwanted behavior. You see it all the time, in parks for example, dog owners shouting to their dogs trying to correct “bad” behavior like they are talking to a child or a friend who just won’t listen. A dog is a dog and they will never understand the human language. They understand certain words and commands by association, but will never understand a longer sentence. And unwanted dog behavior will definitely not change if you scream and wave your finger at your pet.
I once saw a dog owner at my local train station with a large German Shepard. The dog did not behave the way the owner wanted, and after a little while he (owner of the dog) wrestled this big German Shepard to the ground, sat on the dog and shouted “behave yourself… you need to behave yourself” while pushing the dog’s neck down on the grass with his elbow. It looked like two drunken friends having an argument. But the dog was just playing and the owner was full of ignorance.
When you see dog owners doing this kind of “dog training” you feel bad for both the dog and the owner. The only right way of doing dog training is with positive reinforcement. And the Brain Training For Dogs is all about positive reinforcement training.
Module 1: Getting Started
(Module 1 -> 3 will be the basic dog training part of this online course)
Here you will get a bit of information about Adrienne, an introduction to the course and what you will need for the training, like a clicker, types of treats and training toys. You will also see examples of household items that you will be using during training.
One thing that should be mentioned here: During this course, you will never be asked to go out and purchase expensive dog training gear. You probably have most of the items needed already in your home. The clicker for example is optional because you can use your voice for positive reinforcement. A clicker though will be more effective and you will be able to follow all the training steps.
Module 2: Obedience Training 101
In module 2 you have a complete obedience training course. By using the lure technique and a clicker you will learn how to properly teach your dog the ‘sit’ and ‘lie down’ command, the take/leave it command (the ‘leave it’ command is important to prevent your dog getting sick. Dogs have a tendency to taste and even swallow everything they come across), the ‘drop it’ command (drop items on cue), the ‘stay’ command (dog must remain still on cue until a different command is given), the ‘recall’ command (dog must come to you on cue) and last but not least – the ‘heel’ cue and ‘attention heeling’ cue (your dog walks beside you while looking up at you as you walk).
To be honest with you… this module is worth the price tag for the whole BTFD course alone. If you are able to complete just this module, you probably have one of the most obedient dogs in your area. No doubt.
Module 3: Polishing Up Training
Module 3 will help you simplify the training already learned and implemented. Once your dog understands all of the previous commands and the respond is fluid and reliable, you will be able to make it “less obvious” when you want your dog to follow your command. You can use smaller hand gestures and verbal cues instead of a clicker and a whole bunch of treats. You will learn how to fade away treats so your dog will follow your command without receiving a treat every single time.
Module 4: Brain Training
(Module 4 will be the fun brain training part of this whole online dog training course)
In module 4 you will have lots of game examples you can try out with your four legged friend. This module is split up into 7 sub-categories (or sub-modules if you will) and they are:
Module 4 is the core training module of Brain Training For Dogs. Here you will find most of the video examples. There’s a short video for every training part of the module showing the “exam”. This training module goes beyond basic obedience dog training and I think you will have lots of fun trying out the brain training games (21 in total) shown here. Especially when your dog shows real progress. “Open Sesame” will change your life when for example you are about to open the front door to walk out, and you are able to make your dog sit still on command. Maybe you left a few groceries in the car and you just want to pop out a short while to get them. You do not want your dog to push through and run out into the streets. Doing the “Open Sesame” training part will also be really helpful when you are getting ready for a dog walk and you just want your excited friend to sit still while putting on the collar.
There is too much here to go into detail, but I think you will have not just a whole lot of fun with this training module, but also an appreciation over the fact that your dog will be more and more attentive to you as the owner and leader after completing each and every part of the training here.
Module 5: Closing Words
The module 5 will be more of a closing part of this whole online dog training course. You will find links here that goes beyond the Brain Training For Dogs course. For example there is a video archive with training videos for crate training, trick training (take a bow, play dead, roll over and more) and video tips on how to resolve the issue of dogs fighting for attention.
You will also get access to a massive article archive with over a hundred dog training articles that covers the whole spectrum of dog training (puppy training included). If you cannot find answers to your questions and solutions to any behavior problem your dog might have, I would be surprised.
Here’s a video with an overview of the BTFD modules
(bonus content not shown here)
The Bonus Content
Mentioned earlier, you will get access to a huge archive with articles plus a video archive with training videos for behavior modification and trick training as part of the extra content you get with Brain Training For Dogs.
But you will also see two case studies (Sadie and Maggie) of great value as part of the extra content (all videos). Here you will see how Adrienne covers Sadie’s:
- Whining, pacing and going to the door
- Evaluating possessiveness
- Assessing inter-dog aggression tendencies
Example video: Sadie
and Maggie’s jumping up issue.
Example video: Maggie
Lots of great tips here if your furry friend have the same behavioral problems. One problem that is quite normal amongst dog owners is the ‘jumping up’ problem. It is quite embarrassing when your dog jumps up on guests or people you do not know. Seeing how Adrienne covers this will be very helpful if you are struggling with the same issue.
So the video and audio production might not be on the highest professional level, and the members area of the website is pretty basic in terms of design and navigation. But that’s not a big deal with the Brain Training For Dogs online dog training course. The training content is great, you get training tips in all areas of dog training and for the price, you get a whole lot of content. If the video production and website design was on a more professional level, you would probably pay 5 times more for the course.
You can tell that Ms. Farricelli is a professional dog trainer and that she cares about the proper way of doing dog training. And that is ‘positive reinforcement’ training only. You will not see for example “how to use choke collars” or anything like that in this course.
Also with this course, you get access to an active members forum where you can ask questions if you are feeling that your little friend is not progressing with the training. Very helpful if you are in need of guidance.
I think you will save quite a bit of money with this dog training program. Training classes out in the field with a professional instructor can be very expensive in the long run. Getting the Brain Training For Dogs online dog training program will without any doubt put you on the right path if you are new to dog training. I think that BTFD will not disappoint you if you decide to get it. There will be many months of training enjoyment for you and your four legged friend.
